Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They are easily bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves when their owners don't interact with them enough. If they are not socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds that love to play, climb and play. They must spend at least two to three hours every day outside for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet, they are also great pets for children.
Despite their adorable nature they are loud and can be a distraction to those living close by. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which could be a problem in apartments and condos or near young children who may be frightened by their roar.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this, the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is established, breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. It is not an easy process, and it's essential that the pet's owner is patient and understands that this is not a task to be taken lightly. Lolita's care
For decades, activists have been pleading for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, vowed to come up with plans with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean not a concrete tank.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who are close to their family members until death. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can go swimming in the deep sea and perhaps be being reunited with her mother orca. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
